Responsibilities
- The Employee shall provide support to NSWC PC for the Machine Shop. The Programming Machinist VI shall perform machine shop operations such as sawing, turning, milling, grinding, and heat treatment of metallic and non-metallic materials.
- The Programming Machinist VI Shall Manufacture parts from castings, forgings, and other raw stocks made of various metals, metal alloys, and other materials to specifications of drawings per the customers work order. This may include compliance with military specifications or military standards cited within the drawings or specifications.
- Operate various types of conventional and CNC machine tools and their attachments to perform machining operations.
- Provide training in Mastercam or available programming software as required to demonstrate proficiency.
- Interpret drawings and other types of specifications such as sketches or models of parts in order to fabricate a product.
- Apply knowledge of machining processes in performing machining operations such as boring, drilling, planning, milling, and turning on milling machines, radial, or multiple spindle drill presses, shapers, planers, lathes, engravers, or equivalent types of conventional or CNC machine tools.
- Plan necessary work sequences, laying out reference points and lines to be followed in the machining processes, plan for and set up the work in the machine.
- Program the cutter path using Mastercam or available programming software, figure feeds and speeds rates, select and shape metal cutting tools and inserts.
- Perform precision handwork to fit, finish, and assemble machined parts and equipment. Use precision measuring devices and determine what equipment is necessary to complete the task.
- Provide recommendations for modernized technologies or when machining issues arise. (CDRL A023)
- Interface and communicate with the customers as needed to confer regarding drawings, machining services, and technical instructions to complete the work order.
- The Programming Machinist VI produces replacement parts and new parts in making repairs of metal parts of mechanical equipment. Work involves most of the following
- interpreting written instructions and specifications, planning and laying out of work, using a variety of machinists hand tools and precision measuring instruments, setting up and operating standard machine tools.
- The Programming Machinist VI is responsible for the shaping of metal parts to close tolerances, making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining; knowledge of the working properties of the common metals, selecting standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work; and fitting and assembling parts into mechanical equipment.
- In general, the machinists work normally requires a rounded training in machine-shop practice, usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
- The Programming Machinist VI constructs and repairs jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds used in shaping or forming metal or nonmetallic material (e.g., plastic, plaster, rubber, glass).
- Work typically involves planning and laying out work according to models, blueprints, drawings, or other written or oral specifications, understanding the working properties of common metals and alloys, selecting appropriate materials, tools, and processes required to complete task, making necessary shop computations, and setting up and operating various machine tools and related equipment.
- Work for someone in this position also involves using various Tool and Die Makers hand tools and precision measuring instrument, working to very close tolerances, heat-treating metal parts and finished tools and dies to achieve required qualities, and fitting and assembling parts to prescribed tolerances and allowances.
- In general, the Programming Machinist VI’s work requires rounded training in machine shop and tool room practice usually acquired through formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
- The Programming Machinist VI must have CNC Programmer experience. The Programming Machinist VI position specializes in programming CNC machines, which involves writing and editing G-code. The Programming Machinist VI position requires a strong understanding of machining processes as well as software tools. The Programming Machinist VI may work closely with engineers and designers to create precise machining instructions.
- The employee will provide direct support in performing machine shop operations such as Programing complex Projects.
- Operation of sawing, turning, milling, grinding, and heat treatment of metallic and non-metallic materials. Manually operated and CNC machines made accessible for the job tasking requirements include but are not limited to lathes, milling machines, cutting saws, tool and cutter grinders, surface grinders, drill presses, heat treatment ovens, layout and measuring tools along with general hand operated equipment associated with the machinist trade.
- Support in this area will include numerous tasks which are dissimilar in nature, but have in common CNC Programing and CNC Simulation for machining and assembly of metallic and non-metallic materials / components to make completed assemblies per blueprints in accordance with assigned print tolerances. This task includes direct support in performing Machining support, such as but not limited to; gathering required materials, blueprint reading, laying out parts to include figuring feeds and speeds rates, ability to use precision measuring devices, and determining what equipment is necessary to complete the task.
- The Employee shall be required to comply with Shop policy concerning regular work area cleanliness and weekly cleanups.
- The Employee shall receive written work assignments from the Machine Shop Work Leader or his designated representative.
- The Employee shall be responsible for receiving and reviewing blueprints and materials for possible discrepancies, error or omissions that will be necessary to complete assembly.
- The Employee will be familiar with shop related math, knowledge of metals, blueprint reading and geometric dimensioning and tolerance Standards as deemed necessary by the Branch Head, Code E, or designated representative.
Qualifications
- CNC Programing skills and operation and setup of fixtures is required.
- Highschool and 1 or more years experience
- Programming in CNC and computer aided machining software.
- Utilize feature Cam, Master CAM, CAD/CAM software to generate machine instructions in symbolic language to direct numerical control machines to regulate movement of machine along cutting path.
- Basic conventional machinist knowledge and experience is essential for this position.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Clearance.
- Feature Cam, Master CAM, CAD/CAM software/Master Cam.
- HAAS Lathes: Clausing, Colchester, Monarch, Sydney.
- Mills: Milltronics VM 30 and BR 80, Samsung MCV50, Bridgeport series I and II, Bridgeport Easytrack.
- HAAS VF 8, 1500SS, 500 SS 5-Axis vertical machining centers.
- Milltronics Centurion 7 control.
Physical Demands:
- Some lifting up to 75 pounds required.
- Eye, hearing, and foot protection will be required.
- Constant visual awareness is necessary due to moving parts.
- Navy Crane certification and Forklift certification.
- Participation and completion in all training requirements assigned.
